The aide explains that the two girls were previously on Cohort B, but now more students are beginning to opt in to attending school for four days a week rather than the usual two. When I was here on March 2nd, there were only three in-person students in the class (all guys), but today there are two more in-person students (both girls). I was hoping to hand out pies to all the students in this class, but there's a problem - I didn't purchase enough pies for all of them. With everything going on, we forego the novel reading and instead have the students make up missing assignments. One of the aides knows how all of this works, and so I leave it to her to keep it all organized as students move from the class Zoom to the counselor Zoom and back. All students must log into a counselor Zoom, including the in-person students. Once they log in, they remain in the waiting room as their counselor sees them one at a time, and then they tell her what classes they want. They are assigned to these counselors depending on their last name. Here's how it works - at the start of English class today or tomorrow (depending on whether a student has odd or even period English), students log into a Zoom meet set up by their counselors. Notice that this time, I don't have the students listen to The Great Gatsby. That's because these students are doing what many others are doing this time of year (including in both of my OC districts) - starting to choose classes for next year. This time, I choose "Plug It In," my substitution jingle parody.ġ1:05 - Seventh period arrives. Since some of these juniors are in also in the English class (including the lone in-person guy), I prefer to sing a different song this period. They continue to work on assignments where they compare and contrast stocks and mutual bonds, as well as weigh the pros and cons of hiring a financial advisor. The students in this class are still learning about different types of investments. This time, I sing both "Pi Day Serenade" and "Pi Day Carol," since I printed both on the same page of my songbook.ġ0:10 - Fifth period arrives. Patrick's Day, not Pi Day.Īs always, I sing a song in this class - and since I hand out pies, it's another pi song. Tomorrow should be all about the actual day being celebrated that day, which is St. Paddy's Day, I'm done with Pi Day for the year - even if I wind up tomorrow in a math class. It's not all about Pi Day pies - I also give away some more St. I only started on Wednesday this year because I subbed in a math class that day, and I handed pies out today in order to reminisce about the Pi Day party we had last year. So if I'd been hired as a regular math teacher in this district, I would've had to give out pies all week anyway, since if I forget to give a student a pie one day, I'd have to wait an entire week before I see that student in-person again.Įven then, I'd likely give out pies the Tuesday-Friday before Pi Day, not the Wednesday before the math holiday up to the Tuesday after. Well, keep in mind that during the pandemic, students in this particular district attend each class only three days per week - twice online and only once in-person. I've never stretched out Pi Day to a week before. And so I give each of the three in-person students another 7-Eleven pie.Īnd now you're wondering, just how much longer am I going to stretch out Pi Day, anyway? Yes, Pi Day was on a weekend, but still, now I've given out pies all the way from last Wednesday to today. Last year, this was the same group that received a pizza on Pi Day Eve - and now I'm subbing for them again two days after Pi Day. And so am I, considering that I've never read the novel before subbing for this class - and now I've only read whichever chapters are assigned to me on the days I sub, skipping over the other chapters. Some of the students are confused by the events leading up to this. This class is still reading - you guessed it! - The Great Gatsby. The students listen to Chapter 8 - the chapter that ends with the iconic scene where the title character is found floating in a pool. I might as well do "A Day in the Life" again since one of the classes is Business Math, just as I did in my March 2nd post:ĩ:00 - Third period arrives. My two most recent visits - two weeks ago and today - are both on Tuesdays, and so I see the same classes both days. I most recently covered this classroom two weeks ago, in my March 2nd post. It's in my first OC district - and yes, it's for the ukelele teacher. Today I subbed in a high school special ed classroom.
